Arthur Peppercorn was born in 1889, the son of a railway worker. In 1946, Peppercorn was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer of the newly-formed British Railways (BR). In this role, he oversaw the design and construction of some of Britain's most famous steam locomotives, including the A1 Pacifics and the A4 Class Mallard.
