Brigance was born in 1946 in Louisville, Kentucky. He started boxing at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was sparring with some of the best fighters in the world. In 1964, he won the National Golden Gloves tournament at 156 pounds.

Brigance turned professional in 1965, and he quickly established himself as a top contender. He won his first 12 fights, and he was ranked as high as number two in the world at middleweight.

In 1968, Brigance fought for the world middleweight title against Nino Benvenuti. Brigance lost the fight by a close decision, but he proved that he was one of the best fighters in the world.

After losing to Benvenuti, Brigance continued to fight for several more years. He retired in 1976 with a record of 52-6-1.
