Born in the segregated South, Smitherman grew up in a world where words had the power to both divide and unite. She witnessed firsthand the ways in which language was used to oppress and demean African Americans, and she experienced the pain of being silenced and marginalized.

But Smitherman refused to let the forces of oppression define her. Instead, she embraced the power of words and used them to speak out against injustice and inequality. She became a leading scholar in African American language and culture, and she has dedicated her life to teaching and empowering others.

Speaking My Soul is a powerful and inspiring testament to the transformative power of words. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the complexities of race, life, and language in America.
