In his book Unpoverty, Mark Schwartz argues that the working poor are not lazy or unmotivated, but rather that they are trapped in a system that makes it difficult for them to get ahead.

Schwartz, a former social worker who now teaches at the University of California, Berkeley, spent several years interviewing working poor families in the San Francisco Bay Area. He found that these families were working hard, but they were still struggling to make ends meet. They were often living paycheck to paycheck, and they had little or no savings. They were also more likely to experience health problems and to have children who were struggling in school.
Schwartz argues that the system is stacked against the working poor. The minimum wage is too low, affordable housing is scarce, and access to education and training is limited. As a result, the working poor are often trapped in a cycle of poverty that is difficult to escape.
Schwartz offers a number of solutions to help the working poor, including:
- Raising the minimum wage
- Providing affordable housing
- Expanding access to education and training
- Providing more support for working families
- Reforming the criminal justice system
Schwartz argues that these solutions would help to level the playing field for the working poor and give them a better chance to succeed.
Unpoverty is a powerful and important book that sheds light on the challenges facing the working poor. Schwartz's research is meticulous, and his arguments are persuasive. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the problem of poverty in America and to find solutions to help the working poor.
